Map Selection
Map Selection provides the ability to select features by drawing a sketch on the map. Features that intersect the sketch, or are within a certain distance of the sketch, get selected. Access this tool by clicking on the Search tab on the Contents panel and then clicking on Map Selection:

Draw points: This tool will select features that intersect one or more drawn points, such that noncontiguous features can be selected. To select a single feature, double-click on the map on top of the desired feature. To select multiple features, single click on each feature and then double-click on the last feature to be selected.
Draw a line: This tool will select any features that intersect the drawn line. Click on the map to specify the start point, click again to specify one or more line vertexes and then double-click to end the line. For free-hand drawing, click and drag the mouse across the map and then double-click to end the line.
Draw an area: This tool will select any features that intersect the drawn polygon. Click on the map to specify the start point, click again to specify one or more vertexes and then double-click to end the polygon. For free-hand drawing, click and drag the mouse to draw a free-form polygon and double-click to end the sketch.
After the sketch has been made, apply a buffer, if needed: Set the buffer distance and units, and then click the Buffer button.
