The Distance Measurement tool
This tool calculates the linear distance of a drawn feature on the map. Click this tool to activate it. A window displays prompting the user to click on the map to start the measure.

Begin the measurement as directed. Keep clicking to define the line and then double-click to end it. The cumulative length of the line displays on the map and in the Measurement window.
Click New Measurement to reset the drawn line and begin a new measurement.
Use the Unit drop down list to set the measurement units (e.g., feet, meters).
